Advanced Diploma in Clinical Supervision (ONLINE)

An overview.

The Advanced Diploma in Clinical Supervision was established in 2016 and has been awarded Advanced Specialist Training Recognition by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

This specialist post-qualifying training programme is designed for qualified counsellors and psychotherapists who wish to develop their supervisory practice. Combining theoretical study, experiential learning and reflective enquiry, the course provides a robust framework for ethical, effective and relationally-informed clinical supervision.

Participants are supported to develop the knowledge, skills and self-awareness required to work confidently as clinical supervisors with counsellors, psychotherapists and other helping professionals in both individual and group settings. The programme encourages the integration of theory, research, professional standards and lived experience to support the development of an authentic supervisory identity.

Please note that this course alone is not, in and of itself, a route to the Society’s Accredited Register, nor does it guarantee a change in Registrant Grade for existing Registrant Members, nor guarantee a higher entry level of Registrant Grade on application to the Society.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for qualified counsellors and psychotherapists working within private, public, voluntary, educational or healthcare settings who wish to develop supervision skills, deepen their understanding of relational and unconscious processes, and cultivate the personal and professional qualities required for effective supervisory practice.

Aims of the course.

This practical and experiential programme recognises that effective supervision requires more than theoretical knowledge alone. Clinical supervisors draw upon professional discipline, relational awareness, ethical understanding, reflective capacity and the ability to work with complexity in service of safe and effective practice.

The course supports participants in developing the knowledge, skills and professional confidence required to work as Clinical Supervisors across a range of helping professions and organisational contexts.

The learning aims are:

• To develop participants’ knowledge, understanding and practical skills in clinical supervision

• To explore contemporary models of supervision, including the BACP Supervision Competence Framework, and critically consider
their application to supervisory practice

• To deepen awareness of unconscious processes, relational dynamics, parallel process and the use of self within supervision

• To engage critically with current research, professional literature and developments within the field of supervision

• To provide opportunities to practise supervisory skills and critically evaluate supervisory interventions within a supportive learning
environment

• To encourage reflective practice and consideration of the participant’s own professional role, organisational context and emerging
supervisory identity

• To support the development of ethical, inclusive and professionally accountable supervisory practice

Expectations

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants must hold a recognised professional qualification in Counselling or Psychotherapy and have completed a minimum of 450 post-qualification clinical practice hours within their professional field.

All prospective participants will be invited to attend an admissions interview (via Zoom).

What will be expected of participants?

The course includes directed and self-directed learning, group participation, reflective practice, experiential learning activities, skills development, observation exercises, self-awareness work, peer learning and independent study. Learning from these experiences contributes towards the completion of assignments and the professional portfolio.

Participants are expected to engage actively with the programme and demonstrate a commitment to their own professional and personal development throughout the duration of the course.

A minimum attendance rate of 80% is required in order to successfully complete the assessment process.

Where is the course based?

The course is delivered entirely online via Microsoft Teams, through our virtual learning environment, allowing participants to access specialist supervision training from their home or workplace whilst engaging in a rich and interactive learning experience.

How long is the course?

This course is delivered, fortnightly, over an academic year.

Autumn Term – 4 September 2026 – 11 December 2026

Winter Term – 8 January 2027 – 19 March 2027

Spring Term – 16 April 2027 – 23 July 2027

Training days begin at 9:15am and finish at 1.45pm.

How is the course delivered?

This is a collaborative and experiential online learning programme which offers both support and constructive challenge. The course has been specifically designed for online delivery whilst maintaining the relational, reflective and experiential ethos that underpins all Training for Counsellors programmes.

Learning takes place through via live online training sessions, facilitated discussion, skills practice, supervision exercises, reflective activities, tutorials, peer learning and independent study.

We intentionally work with smaller groups to ensure participants have sufficient opportunity to engage fully, practise skills, receive feedback and develop confidence in their supervisory role. Participants are encouraged to critically examine both theory and practice while developing their own authentic supervisory style.

As supervision itself is increasingly delivered online, participants gain valuable first-hand experience of working relationally, ethically and effectively within an online environment.

Learning is evidenced through portfolio development, written assignments and practical assessment activities.

The learning environment is grounded in adult learning principles and informed by the educational philosophy of Carl Rogers. We recognise that participants bring significant personal and professional experience to the programme. This knowledge and experience is valued and utilised sensitively within the learning community to support meaningful personal and professional development.

• 2,000-word analysis of a recorded supervision session, including a 10-minute transcript

• Knowledge-sharing presentation

• Essay: A Question About Supervision (2,000 words)

• Analysed 10-minute transcript (3,000 words)

• Personal Learning Statement (1,000 words)

• Completed Portfolio of Evidence

Costs

What is the cost?

The cost of the programme is £2,975:

£500 non-refundable deposit secures a place on the course.

£225 x 11 monthly payments on 1st of the month beginning 1st September 2026.

The course fee includes training attendance, course materials, assessment, moderation and certification.

Are there any other costs?

Participants are expected to purchase or access their own copies of the 2 core texts.

In addition, participants are required to undertake supervision of their supervisory practice. A minimum of 8 hours of supervision is recommended across the duration of the programme for at least 40-hours of clinical supervision practice.

Participants will require access to a reliable internet connection, a device capable of supporting online video conferencing, and a private, confidential space from which to attend training and participate in skills practice activities.
